Biographical Sketch
A native of Santiago, Chile, Dr. Stagno earned his undergraduate medical degrees at the University of Chile, followed by a residency in pediatrics at Roberto del Rio Children’s Hospital. He first came to UAB as a fellow in Perinatal Infectious Diseases in 1971. He rose through the ranks very quickly, becoming a Professor in 1980. In 1989, he was named Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at UAB and Physician-in-Chief of the Children’s of Alabama. In recognition of his outstanding leadership and research, Dr. Stagno was appointed to the Katharine Reynolds Ireland Chair of Pediatrics in February 1993. Because of his tremendous administrative skills, he has also served as Interim Vice President for Health Affairs (1995) at UAB, Interim President of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (2008), and as President of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (2010-2012).
