Biographical Sketch 
Carlos A. Estrada, MD, MS, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Chief, Section of General Internal Medicine, Birmingham VAMC, Senior Scholar and Co-Director of the Birmingham Veterans Administration Quality Scholar Fellowship Program (VAQS), and Scientist at the Health Services Research and Development Programs, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers. As a general internal medicine physician working at three large academic medical centers for the past 25 years, he had the privilege of serving as Division Director in two of them. As such, over the years he has acquired and applied a variety of skills in administration, leadership, medical education, mentoring, research, and patient care. His research interests have evolved over time and now include quality improvement, implementation research, clinical reasoning, medical education, faculty development, inter-professional education, clinical prediction rules, and decision analysis. He has designed, conducted, analyzed, and published studies using the spectrum of research design (case reports, case-series, cross-sectional, cohort, clustered randomized trials, decision analysis, clinical reasoning). Dr. Estrada is a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), USMLE Gross Anatomy & Embryology Test Material Development Committee (TMDC), United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). He served as member of the Editorial Board and Deputy Editor for The Journal of General Internal Medicine, CME Editor for ACP Medicine Chapter self-assessment program (American College of Physicians), and Editor of the Leadership Forum (Newsletter; Association of Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine, ACLGIM). He Chaired the 2009 National Program and served as Council member at the Society of General Internal Medicine. Dr Estrada received his medical degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru. He then completed his internship, residency in internal medicine and Chief Medical Residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. While completing his fellowship in general internal medicine, also at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr Estrada received a Master of Science degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is married to Jennie Andresen, pediatrician at UAB, and has two daughters.

Description
The experiences and collaboration with educators and clinicians from nursing, pediatrics, psychiatry, physical medicine, and hospital medicine have broadened his academic horizon. Dr Estrada has authored over 90 articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Funded by the NHLBI, he conducted studies on the evaluation of cultural competency education (Improving Cultural Competency: An Online Case-Based Curriculum - K07 HL081373-01. At East Carolina University, he conducted research on low-literacy among elderly patients receiving anticoagulants, developed low-literacy brochures, and implemented a nurse-led anticoagulation management service.
