Dr. F. Cleveland Kinney’s major research interests involve medications for the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. He has been Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on a number of studies with these medications as well as a study involving medication for mild cognitive impairment. His research interests also include the statistical and clinical relationships among neuroimaging studies, i.e., SPECT and MRI scans, with neuropsychological, psychological, psychiatric and behavioral correlates of neuropathological illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular Dementia, HIV-associated cognitive changes and other neurological and psychiatric illnesses. Dr. Kinney has taught medical students within the University of Alabama School of Medicine intermittently for over 25 years. He teaches in the Behavioral Sciences/Human Sexuality course, the Neuroscience course and the Correlative Pathology Neurosciences course. He has trained psychiatry residents and mentored five geriatric psychiatry residents in the Geriatric Psychiatry fifth year residency program. Dr. Kinney mentored Dr. Brad White, a medical student, in a research grant entitled, An Analysis of Variables that Determine Treatment Outcome in Patients Receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy, and Dr. Beverly Bush, a neuropsychologist, in her NIH-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology.
