Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Barnett is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Having previously completed a residency in combined Internal Medicine & Pediatrics and a fellowship in Palliative Care for both children and adults, he now attends on the palliative care services at UAB and Children’s of Alabama. He is the Director of the UAB Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program and is the Core Leader for Education for the UAB Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics & Palliative Care. He has been a faculty consultant in communication skills for the United States Medical Licensing Clinical Skills exam and is a senior faculty facilitator for the national VITALtalk communication skills program. He developed and leads UAB ACT (Advanced Communication Training), an interprofessional communication skills program for UAB Medicine. He has presented at the national meetings of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine, the National Black Nurses Association, and at the Veterans Affairs National Center for Ethics in Health Care. Dr. Barnett is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine and is a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine, the American College of Physicians, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
