Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Louis J. Dell’Italia was born in Newark, NJ. He received his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1978. He subsequently received Internal Medicine training at Georgetown and Cardiology fellowship training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Before coming to UAB in 1988, Dr. Dell’Italia was an Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas.

Title
Mechanisms of Remodeling of the Heart in Heart Failure
Description
The overarching theme of my research is to understand the biochemical and molecular mechanisms that regulate left ventricular (LV) remodeling in various forms of heart failure. Over the past 20 years our laboratory has implemented a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating in vitro and in vivo systems and more recently translational / clinical studies that have provided the impetus for the research proposed in this application. We have three specific areas of interest in the laboratory: 1) understanding the unique pattern of LV remodeling in patients with volume overload of mitral regurgitation, 2) understanding how inflammation oxidative stress causes cardiomyocyte remodeling and failure, 3) understanding how the cardiomyocyte mitochondria are both targets and sources of oxidative stress in the cardiomyocyte subjected to stretch in vitro and volume overload in vivo.
