Biographical Sketch 
Chander Raman (b. 1961), Professor of Dermatology and Microbiology, received his B.Sc. degree in Zoology from Madras University, India (1980). He subsequently received his M.S. degree in Microbiology from Idaho State University (1984) and Ph.D. degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University (1989) with special emphasis in immunology and host responses to infectious diseases. During his postdoctoral training with Dr. Katherine Knight at Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine (1984-1989), he developed an interest in immunogenetics and regulation of lymphocyte activation. He continued his studies first as an Assistant Scientist at Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University Medical College (1994-1996) and moved to University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Medicine and is currently a Professor in the Department of Dermatology with a joint appointment in the Department of Microbiology.



Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Lymphocyte activation, immunopathogenesis of systemic and neuroimmune autoimmune disease, inflammatory diseases of the skin.
Description
Dr. Raman’s research focuses on immunopathogenesis of inflammatory and autoinflammatory diseases with a special interest in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The projects are primarily human based followed by animal models for reductionist studies.
