Biographical Sketch
Dr. Nicole C. Wright, PhD MPH earned a Bachelor of Science from Elon University in Elon, NC, and both her Master of Public Health and Doctorate of Philosophy in Epidemiology from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. Her research encompasses the umbrella of osteoporosis and musculoskeletal diseases epidemiology. She has become one of the national leaders in using population data to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and evaluating trends in fragility fractures. Her early work focused on identifying risk factors for fractures using the nationwide Women’s Health Initiative cohort study, including rheumatoid arthritis, hip structural geometry, calcium and vitamin D supplementation, admixture, and the role specific fractures play in fracture recurrence. During a two year Postdoctoral Fellowship in the UAB Department of Epidemiology, she expanded from traditional cohort based observational studies to studies in administrative claims data. Specifically, she focused on the incidence of osteoporotic fractures in the US Medicare population, with interest in identifying potential race and ethnic disparities in fracture incidence and outcomes. During this time, she also became involved with developing and validating claims-based algorithms to identify osteoporosis prevention activities, medications, and/outcomes. Dr. Wright joined the UAB Department of Epidemiology faculty as an Assistant Professor in December of 2012. In addition to continuing previous lines of research, she became interested in two unique areas within the osteoporosis field, 1) understanding patient activation and optimizing patient participation in osteoporosis related clinical trials, and 2) evaluating racial disparities in osteoporosis management and outcome. With funding from AHRQ K12 and pilot funding from the Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR), she has been able to use quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate racial differences in osteoporosis knowledge and utilization of prevention activities. She currently has a K01 award from NIAMS to investigate racial differences in fractures outcomes. In August of 2018, she was promoted to Associated Professor with award of Tenure.
