Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Varner is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Surgery at UAB and Director of the Division of Medical Surgical Gynecology. He participates extensively in interdisciplinary research within the Medical Center and especially in conjunction with the UAB Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and the Center for Aging. He is one of the most respected physicians in the medical center, in Jefferson County, and in the state of Alabama.

Robert Edward (“Ed”) Varner is a superb clinician and recognized nationally as one of the preeminent experts in urogynecology. He is a superb surgeon with exceptional knowledge of benign gynecologic disorders, and has superb research credentials and interest in women’s health issues. The issue of quality of life for women suffering from incontinence is substantial and important to the scientific and medical community. Dr. Varner has devoted his substantial federally funded research and clinical practice to understanding the mechanisms and treatment of genitourinary disorders. He is the author of many nationally peer reviewed publications. Dr. Varner is acknowledged as one of the best teachers in the Department of OBGYN. Our students, house-staff and colleagues commend his excellent teaching. His service to the local and national community is evident in his active participation on executive-level committees in the Jefferson County Medical Society, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics, and the American Urogynecologic Society.
