Biographical Sketch
Dr. John H. Grant, III, joined the UAB Department of Surgery’s Division of Plastic Surgery in 1997. He currently serves as the James C. Lee, III Chair in Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Children’s of Alabama, as well as his role as Professor of Surgery—UAB. Dr. Grant’s major research interests are in the fields of cleft and craniofacial outcomes research. With a personal experience of over 800 primary palate repairs, almost 200 redo palate repairs, over 560 primary cleft lip repairs and almost 200 redo lip repairs, his outcomes with respect to healing and speech are comparable with the best published results worldwide. His palatal fistula rate is below 1% and secondary speech surgery is needed in less than 7% of patients after primary palate repair. His experience with craniofacial surgery includes over 600 cases with less than 0.5 % infection rate and less than 5% need for revision procedures. His teaching activities have included teaching Plastic Surgery techniques and principles to Plastic Surgery Residents, General Surgery Residents, Medical Students and SA Students. He is actively working to develop high level craniofacial surgery programs in developing nations (Vietnam, Ghana and Egypt) by forming close training relationships with surgeons in these countries.
