This course is an excellent opportunity to network and showcase your skills in the clinical practice of EM. You will be allowed to meet and work alongside clinical faculty and residents thereby providing an opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to learn more about our program. Both your application and performance during the rotation are taken into consideration when extending invitations to interview for residency.
Course Description The focus of this course is to assist students with developing basic skills and knowledge necessary in the assessment and treatment of acutely ill or injured patients. Students will work 13-14 clinical shifts while on rotation and given the variety of experiences involved in this course, all students are required to attend the orientation which is given on the first day of the course. The clinical portion of this course is structured such that students have an active role in patient care and are frequently the first person to asses a patient. These interactions will allow the student to develop skills in performing a focused history and physical exam. The student will then present the patient to the senior emergency medicine resident or attending. A differential diagnosis will be discussed and a plan of care initiated. Additionally, the student may be involved in documentation where appropriate. The student will be expected to determine the patient's response to therapy and will be expected to follow-up on all work-ups through to completion. An appropriate disposition will be determined through discussion with the senior resident and attending. Students will also have the opportunity to assist in procedures which include: suturing, Foley catheter placement, nasogastric tube insertion, lumbar punctures, ultrasounds, IV placement, arterial blood gas sampling, and advanced airways. The didactic portion of this course will be dependent on the month and may include lectures covering basic topics of emergency medicine and interactive simulations.

Requirements Shifts: approximately 13 shifts per 4-week block. A mixture of day, evening, night shifts will be required.
Attendance: orientation on the first day of the rotation; weekly lectures and simulation labs; at the beginning of shifts, throughout the shifts, and at end of shifts through check-out
Evaluation The rotation is pass/fail.
Brief End-of-shift evaluations at the end of each shift worked. These are completed by the senior resident or attending that the student worked with during that shift.
